Whizkid Wednesday: American pronunciation and how to practise it

Do you want to speak English? Then you have a choice of many pronunciations. The two main ones being British English and American English. From an interview with Sheri Summers, also known as “The Pronunciation Queen”, we took the following tips to improve your American accent.

1. Make sure you find out how your current pronunciation and speech patterns differ from a native speaker’s and learn exactly what you need to do to make changes to it. Be aware of what you are missing and how you can add it into your speech.

2. Now that you know about it, become temporarily hyperaware of how native speakers are using it. This is often a fun, and even shocking, part of the process. There are so many ah-ha moments as you are going through this awareness stage.

3. Practise (or as the American spell it: practice) it on your own and try to use it in your own speech as often as it takes to make it a habit. If you don’t create a new habit for yourself, you won’t be able to use it consistently.

So basically, you have to listen carefully and practise a lot! Do you want to read more? Here’s the full interview.
